1 February 2024
Are you taking the leap this year?
By Emma George, Family Solicitor, Hayes + Storr.
With 2024 being a leap year, tradition states that females can propose to their partners on February 29th. Whilst it is not necessarily the case that modern day proposals are gender bias, it provides a further reason for women to propose to their partners because of it being a unique day with the event coming around only once every four years.
Research by Guides for Brides found that 1 in 4 women (27%) said they would propose or have already proposed to their partners, and over a quarter of these women said that they would do it on or wait for a leap year with a success rate of 88% of those who have proposed.
If you are considering a proposal on February 29th – or any other day for that matter! – it is important to ensure that your future finances are protected by considering a prenuptial agreement. A prenuptial agreement can protect:
• Any inheritance
• Property
• Family heirlooms
• Vehicles
• Savings
• Financial gifts
