Springwood to the Big Apple: Eat, sleep, mock!

A group of Springwood High School students have been giving up their free time to learn about the justice system and have been awarded a place at an international mock trial competition in New York, where they will compete with teams from Australasia, Asia, Europe and North America.

This follows their success at the national final of the Barrister Mock Trial Competition at the Old Bailey in London in April, described by participating student Lauren Roberts as a “fantastic and once in a lifetime experience”. Never did they imagine, being the youngest to compete, that they would make it to the top ten, coming 8th in the country and consequently gaining a place at International level.

The Mock Trials Competition is organised through the Citizen Foundation which has seen more than 53,000 students taking part in criminal mock trials, in real courts and in front of real judges, all thanks to support from The Bar Council.

Hayes + Storr are delighted to be sponsoring and supporting the students on their journey to New York City which takes place in just under two weeks time.“For anyone that gives young people a bad press, come and spend a day at the mock trials competition where you will see nothing but polite, hard-working and enthusiastic students,” said project co-ordinator Hayley Roberts.

After months of hard work and sleepless nights, the road to the International Mock Trials has been a long one and we can’t wait to hear what happens next. Watch this space to stay updated!
