Support When Children’s Services Get Involved
When Children’s Services become involved with your family, it can be an incredibly stressful and uncertain time. You may feel overwhelmed, confused, or unsure about what to do next. We understand how difficult this process can be, and we’re here to help you navigate every step with clear advice, calm guidance, and a focus on achieving the best possible outcome for your family.
If a social worker has contacted you with concerns about your children, or if you’ve been asked to attend a meeting and you’re unsure what this means, we can help you understand your rights and answer any questions you may have.
Pre-Proceedings (PLO) Meetings
Children’s Services are required to work with families to address any concerns they have. However, when these concerns become more serious, they may begin Pre-Proceedings, also known as PLO (Public Law Outline) meetings. This is often the final step before the Local Authority considers starting Care Proceedings through the Family Court.
If you’ve been invited to a PLO meeting, you are entitled to free legal representation. Our experienced family law team will attend the meeting with you, help you understand the Local Authority’s concerns, and work with you to avoid the case going to court wherever possible.
Care Proceedings
The Local Authority has a duty to protect children who are at risk of, or have already experienced, significant harm. This may involve concerns around:
- Neglect
- Emotional harm
- Physical abuse
- Sexual abuse
If the Local Authority believes the concerns cannot be managed without court involvement, they may apply to the Family Court to begin Care Proceedings. This is a serious step with potentially life-changing consequences.
If you’ve received court papers or been told that the Local Authority is making an application to court, do not delay. Contact us as soon as possible. We are here to help you understand the process, prepare your case, and support you at every stage of the proceedings.
